Today kicked off 7 Days, 7 Ways to Save and Celebrate National Dog Week.

I'll be honest, every week is a dog's week at SitStay. We have dogs in the office nearly everyday including long-time four-legged friends like Rambo the 120-pound Lab and Fenway the Boston Terrier, and new rescues including Cameron the Pug and as of this weekend, Ringo the Amazing Mystery Mutt.

Most holidays remind us to do more of the things we love. Whether you are a dog owner or not, we encourage you to pause and do good in honor of man's best friend. Here are 7 ways to participate in National Dog Week.

Share your time and a dime by volunteering, donating or adopting from your local animal shelter. Your helping hands and loving heart is always needed.

This is our favorite; when you see pet parents out and about with their dogs, pay them a complement, say hello or even share one of your favorite treats.

Let's face it, the best way to celebrate is with a little pampering ... endulge your dog with an unexpected trip to the groomer, new treat or stylish new collar.

Ntaional Dog Week is the last week of September which also happens to be about 80 days until Christmas. HOLY COW! I mean HOLY DAWG!

Host a only pets allowed party this week with an assortment of fun goodies such as Brown Beggers Chew Sampler, serve fresh water in plastic martini glasses and organize lots of backyard playtime. Don't forget the poop bags (these also make great gifts for your guests).

Most of us are enjoying outdoor-friendly weather this week. Get on those sneakers, DOOG walking belt and quality harness and get moving. Perhaps an evening walk after a long days work - how about packing a picinic basket. Nothing is better than an interactive game of fetch - we just got these new toys at and LOVE them!

There are very few moments that can compete with the joyful feeling we share when playing with our dogs. They are happy, tails are wagging, slobber is flying and at that moment ... life is good. Life with a dog is indeed the GOODLIFE! Amidst your busy schedule, be sure to take the time and play, play, play!
Happy National Dog Week!

Everything Your Service Dog Needs

Posted by sitstaydogs

Jun 17, 2014 11:30:00 AM

When you have a service dog or therapy dog, it's important to have access to everything your dog needs. Service and therapy dogs frequently visit places that are off-limits to pets, and it's important for them to be properly recognized as service animals. This not only ensures that the dogs will always be welcome, but also helps identify them to curious passersby.

Vests are especially helpful and make it easier to identify service dogs. Store and office staff will typically identify a dog as a service or therapy animal when a vest is worn. Bright colors like red, blue, green and orange are easily spotted. These vests are made from durable material and options with reflective material for walking at night are available.

Patches help identify dogs used for service or therapy work to the public. It's very common for people to be tempted to pat dogs that they see in public with their owners. However, dogs involved in service or therapy work need to be able to stay focused on the task at hand.

Some of the ways in which these patches help include:

  • Letting members of the general public know that they are service animals and allowed to be in a store, restaurant or other public place
  • Pointing out when service dogs are in training and must be exposed to the same situations as full service animals
  • Advising interested passersby to refrain from patting the dog or asking permission first, to avoid needlessly distracting him or her
  • Notifying the public that the dog assists its owner with mobility or hearing issues and alerts others to seizures or other emergencies
  • Alerting others to the fact that he or she is a therapy dog, allowed to enter nursing homes and other healthcare facilities
  • Informing others that the dog is used for search purposes

There are several accessories that are helpful for people who own or train service dogs. Professionally designed service dog cards can be presented to anyone who questions a dog's legal ability to be in a public place. These cards advise the reader of the owner's rights under the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Other helpful accessories include web harnesses designed to be used with service dog vests. They are sturdy enough for the demands of even the biggest dogs. When owners have sight or mobility issues, it is especially important to make sure the dog is always securely leashed.

Spring Cleaning & Your Dog

Groans. Spring cleaning. The time everyone can anticipate when the weather starts to turn, the dust bunnies are starting to multiply, and that dreaded loss of the precious hour of sleep and turning our clocks forward. It's finally time, we are shedding our winter coats, boots and clutter for shorts, longer days and warmer weather! YES!

When making your checklist of necessary cleaning supplies, don't forget about Fido & the kiddos! Be sure that cleaning products are made of all-natural products or are NON-toxic. These two labels are very important to ensure that when our favorite family members are crawling/walking around the ground and cleaned areas they are protected from harmful chemicals.

It is so easy for children (four-legged children included) to get in to mop buckets and open containers when your back is turned for 1 second. So, make sure to set your pack up with a fun activity in the backyard or a confined space where you won’t have to worry about them coming across cleaning agents! (and this prevents them from creating more mess while you are trying to clean one up)

It is also a good idea to watch for any flare up of allergy symptoms. Cleaning can expose mold spores, dust, etc. Signs of allergy symptoms: excessive itching, runny nose, dry nose, biting, irritated eyes, etc. Properly throwing away materials cleaned with or doing a second spot clean can help these symptoms subside.

ALSO make sure you are always cleaning up after your favorite four-legged friends! SitStay has all of the essential receptacles to make sure the job is done! Including a few adorable poop bag dispensers that can easily be attached to leashes so a bag is always on hand - literally.

Also, in the spirit of spring cleaning keep it fresh and bright with lavender scented poop bags! And for the human varieties: Poo Pourri for your own bathrooms: the before you go poo spray to ensure only pleasant odors!

Welcome, Spring!

Spring Cleaning: Don't Forget Fido's Pantry

Posted by sitstaydogs

Mar 31, 2014 1:30:42 PM

Spring cleaning is in full swing around SitStay (and at home)! We all remember to cover the bases: sweeping, mopping, dusting (yes, that means dusting under things too!) and removing as much clutter as we can.

Spring cleaning can also mean a fresh start for your pantry, AND Fido's pantry. When was the last time you got your favorite furry friends a new bag of treats? What is the expiration date on the old ones? While spring cleaning you always want to be checking labels. Feeding Fido (and yourself and other humans) old or expired food can be harmful, and just isn’t enjoyable for your dog, and surely won't be enjoyable for you when cleaning up the result.

After checking the date on the label, be sure to check the quality of the ingredients. To ensure that your pup is actually getting the benefits from the superfood or featured ingredient, make sure that ingredient is near the top of the list. Ingredients are listed by the percent content it makes up the product.

While ingredients are important, what is the brand telling you? Is this brand environmentally and pet friendly? Are they trying to make a difference in the life of your dog or just trying to make a buck? SitStay believes in only featuring brands that are beneficial to your pup! Remember, we only recommend products that we also feed our own dogs!

A few of our favorite brands include:
- Max & Ruffy’s
- Wet Noses
- Evanger’s
- Scout & Zoe’s

Happy Spring, and happy cleaning!

Spring Into Outdoor Play

Posted by sitstaydogs

Mar 20, 2014 8:00:00 AM

We’ve been stuck inside all winter. Trying to play fetch in the living room, braving the cold for a quick, freezing walk, and longing for those dog days of summer again. Well no more! As of TODAY, March 20th, it is officially spring, and we're excited!

Exercise and play, which involve anything from fetch to a walk, provide many benefits for your pooch. Regular exercise helps keep dogs healthy and limber, reduces digestive problems, aids in weight control, and can put an end to bad behavior problems that a dog who doesn’t get enough play and exercise time might have.

As you head outdoors to enjoy the warmer (and sometimes bipolar) weather of spring, don’t forget Fido’s toys. At SitStay, we love Twiggy the Stick, a member of The Sticks, a loveable family of totally terrified fetch toys. Made from recycled rubber, these fun toys are both dog friendly and eco-friendly. Twiggy’s slobber resistant rope means easier throwing and less slobber for you. Thanks to eyes that glow in the dark and Twiggy’s ability to float in water, you won’t have any trouble finding this member of the Sticks family.

Another great toy for that member of your family who loves to run and play fetch is the Hyperflite Jawz Disc. This tough, puncture resistant disc is perfect for big dogs. All Jawz discs feature Hyperflite's patent pending X-Flash™ Anti-Glare Technology. The Hyperflite Jawz Disc is a great flying disc for competition or playtime at the park. Still, while both of these toys are tough, neither are intended to be chew toys.

As you grab your tennis shoes and Fido’s leash, don’t forget to grab his toys. Head out and enjoy some backyard or park play in the beautiful spring sunshine with your favorite four legged friend!

Your Dog: The Perfect Exercise Partner

Posted by sitstaydogs

Mar 18, 2014 10:32:00 AM

At the end of a long work day, we often come home to dinner that needs to be made, children that want to play, or a lengthy to-do list. When it’s cold outside, the couch and a blanket sound far more appealing than working out (trust me, been there!). Exercising is easy to push down the list. Thank goodness spring is just around the corner (March 20!). And thank goodness for that brown-eyed, heavy breather at your feet right now.

According to the World Health Organization, adults 18 to 65 years old need 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise five days per week, along with strengthening exercises two days a week. A study conducted at the University of Western Australia found that 7 in 10 adult dog owners achieved 150 minutes of physical exercise per week, compared to only 7 in 10 non-owners. Your dog is the perfect exercise partner. Buddy won’t cancel on your workout plans because of cold weather or a long to-do list. Hitting the pavement or trail with him is beneficial for the both of you.

We know that walking burns calories and wards off heart disease, but did you know that it’s also a great stress reliever? Getting outside, breathing in some fresh air, taking in your surroundings, and savoring a break before you dive into your evening activities, is a great idea for you and your dog, especially after a long day at the office.

If Buddy is getting himself into trouble at home or barking and whining a lot, he’s probably trying to tell you that he needs more exercise to help him burn off some energy and feel less restless at home. But your nightly walks won’t just benefit him. Walking, like any other cardiovascular exercise, produces stress-busting endorphins and boosts energy. Just being outside and spending time in nature, studies have found, can reduce stress. Walking your dog is also a fantastic way to meet other people in your neighborhood.

If you’re an avid runner, walker, or hiker, or simply need your hands free to deal with the kids, the Buddy System is a great leash system. With your hands free, your movement isn’t restricted and you can focus on the trail ahead. Or maybe your hands or pockets are often full when you leave for a walk. The DOOG Walkie Utility Belt comes complete with built-in pick up bags, anti-bacterial handwipes, a clip, pocket for valuables, and even a velcro patch for Buddy’s tennis ball, so you don’t have to juggle everything.

If you're looking for a bright, new collar or leash this spring, SitStay has plenty of colors and sizes to choose from so you can find Buddy the perfect gear. If Buddy's a puller, consider an Easy Walk Harness, which gently discourages him from pulling while walking.

If Buddy’s big brown eyes don’t always send you running to grab the leash, consider making a walking schedule to hang on your fridge. It doesn’t matter how or when you walk, whether you take three 10-minute walks or walk for 30 minutes straight, just be sure to get out and enjoy the spring weather.

See you out there!

Green Tripe: Can You Stomach, Stomach?

Posted by sitstaydogs

Mar 17, 2014 10:04:01 AM

Nausea, heartburn, indigestion, upset stomach, diarrhea...GO Pepto Bismol. WAIT. This is for pups, not humans. Redo: Nausea, heartburn, indigestion, upset stomach, diarrhea...GO Green Tripe!

Green tripe is an especially gentle food. It is the most natural food you can feed your dog. With vitamins and amino acids to spare, green tripe is full of the nutrients that boost your dog’s natural energy. Described as a well known secret among top breeders of performance dogs, green tripe is slowly beginning to gain the recognition it deserves among dog owners.

So what exactly are we talking about? Tripe is the stomach lining of ruminating (grazing) animals such as cattle, deer, sheep and goats. Remember learning about the four chambers of these animals’ stomachs on a field trip in grade school? Those four chambers consistently break down food with a mix of digestive enzymes, gastric juices, and amino acids. Delicious!

We know with that introduction, some of you are probably cringing in your chair. But it’s important to understand that the same digestive enzymes and bacteria that help the animal digest his food will do the same for your dog! Digestive enzymes are important because they help the body digest food, with as little energy used as possible. The less energy required to digest food, the more nutritional benefit your dog gets out of it.

Digestive enzymes also do far more than help with digestion. In a helpful article, Dogs Naturally Magazine explains that these enzymes purify and cleanse the blood and help to remove toxins and parasites. They also improve metabolism, hormonal function, and boost the immune system. Because of its impressive resume of benefits, we’re excited to introduce Evanger's 100% Whole Meat Freeze Dried Beef Tripe Treats. This treat boasts of the long list of benefits green tripe has to offer, which make it hard to ignore this product, even if we do wrinkle our noses a bit. Trust us, Fido won’t.
