We're all familiar with the concept that positive reinforcement is used to promote good behavior. The more that reinforcement occurs, through treats and other rewards, the more that behavior is strengthened. This doesn’t limit your treat giving to only when you’re teaching your dog to sit or stay. If you’re gone for most of the day at work and you come home to find Fido hasn’t chewed anything or taken any naps on furniture he shouldn’t be on, a reward is a great idea. On the other hand, if you know you’re going to be gone all day, leaving your dog with something to chew on or keep him busy all day might help him to not dread your leaving, knowing that he’ll have something to keep his attention while you’re gone. There are a number of reasons to treat your dog and we have a number of things to treat him with!

Purina Pet Foods breaks treats into five categories: rewards, treats, biscuits, chews, and health treats. Rewards are smaller, meat-based treats used mostly during training. Your dog shouldn’t get more than 10% of his daily calories through this category. General treats shouldn’t exceed more than 15% of your dog’s daily dietary requirement. Biscuits can be fed as a snack or added to canned food. They can help clean your dog’s teeth and can account for up to 15% of your dog’s total diet. Chews are great for strengthening your dogs teeth and keeping them busy while you’re away. Health treats are specifically designed to support healthy bodies, with additional benefits such as vitamins and minerals.

Now that we have a better understanding of when to give treats, let’s find some that your dog will love!

SitStay's own Brown Beggers™ Chicken Breast Bites are born, raised, and made in the USA. High in protein and low in fat, these dog chews have no preservatives and have been slow roasted to ensure a crunchy bite. They are great general treats or dog chews, making them an ideal choice for after a long walk or when you need to keep your dog busy for a little while.

With only one ingredient, Polkadog Cod Skins offer numerous benefits. With every crunch comes omega-3 fatty acids, freshness and bold flavor. These healthy dog chews make a fantastic alternative to rawhide and bully chews. Fish skins also make a great alternative treat for dogs with allergies to chicken, beef or lamb proteins. Made by hand, these cod skins are a twist on dog treats - literally.

If your dog has any allergies to meat or gluten, Brown Beggers™ Canine Sweet Potato Patties are the perfect solution. These cookies are vitamin and mineral enhanced goodies for your dogs. Rather than using wheat, corn, or gluten, Psyllium seed husks are a key ingredient, which promote a healthy digestive system. Offered in several flavors, these cookies are easy to break into smaller pieces, making them great as whole treats or smaller training aids.

Max & Ruffy's organic, vegan dog treats are hard to categorize with other mainstream products. Made with 100% certified organic, human-grade ingredients, these natural treats stand alone. Blueberries, which are rich in antioxidants, are fantastic for skin, coat, and digestion, among a number of other things. These morsels of culinary goodness are the perfect size for training treats.

Treats of all kinds make rewarding your dog for good behavior, training, or just because, easy. So go ahead, spoil that lucky dog of yours!
