Starbucks Service Dog Incident Raises Awareness

Today we learned about Yancy Baer’s unfortunate experience with his service dog at a Starbucks in Houston. As a company committed to outfitting service dog vests and apparel since 1998, we see this as a great learning opportunity for so many.

As defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a service dog is one that performs a task for the benefit of a person with a disability. A disability can be any physical or mental condition that substantially limits a major life activity. Some disabilities are not visible, such as deafness, epilepsy, diabetes, & psychological conditions.

Assistance dogs not only provide a specific service to their handlers, but also greatly enhance the quality of their lives with a new sense of freedom and independence.

There are three types of Assistance Dogs:

  • Guide Dogs – for the blind and the visually impaired

  • Hearing Dogs – for the deaf and hard of hearing

  • Service Dogs – for people with disabilities other than those related to vision or hearing 

Unfortunately, no registration is required by the ADA for service dogs. There is no federal  requirement for the dog to wear any special gear or identification. There is also no requirement that the handler carry any certification papers showing that the dog has been trained as a service dog.

Contrary to popular belief, there is no federal registry or certification program for service dogs. United States Service Dog Registry seems to be the most well-known and respected.

Because of the amount of grey space that fills this industry, not all legitimate service dogs are received by the public with the respect they deserve, as we see with Yancy Baer’s story.

It is concerning when we hear stories like the one at Starbucks, however, there is silver lining with occurrences like these to raise awareness and remind us that there is tremendous room for growth in the government, legitimacy and protection of service dogs.

Meet Mr Omega 3 and Mrs Omega 6

Once upon a time there were two fatty acids, Miss Omega 3 and Mr. Omega 6. They traveled near and far in all sorts of ingredients and product formulations searching for true love.

Miss Omega 3 was a polyunsaturated fatty acid. She loved hanging out in healthy fish and oils, a few plant oils and other hot spots. Omega 3 was in charge of helping normal growth, improving heart function, and also helping the inflammatory agents of the body to fight off infection. Through her busy days of curing and improving the body, still she yearned for her one true love.

Mr. Omega 6 was a similar fatty acid, that loved to be a part of many plant oils (like avocado, flax, hemp, and soybeans, to name a few). Omega 6 helped to keep skin at its best, improve kidney and renal function, and help to ensure healthy offspring. He worked hard in his jobs to improve the body, but like Miss Omega 3, knew there had to be more to life.

Hustling With a Hound Dog: exercising with my beagle

The Day the Journey Began: Series 1:1

55 pounds! Today my husband Derek, beagle Dexter and I weighed in and tallied 55 pounds lost between the 3 of us. 9 weeks ago my husband had a doctor’s appointment that didn’t fair so well. His triglycerides where through the roof and his doctors were concerned about his weight and overall health.

Derek & I are in our upper 30’s. We live in rural Nebraska and spend most of our free time running after 2 teenage boys and 1 beagle. Both former college athletes, we know the value of exercise and eating well but excused our lack of both due to our busy lifestyle (and lack of amenities – we have running water but not gyms). We’ve never been “dieters” and never will be, but the day we had that conversation with our concerned doctor, we knew something had to change. Immediately.

Our thoughts were plenty on the ride home, the opposite of our conversations. Neither sure of what was next … until we got home. When we walked in the front door, Dexter - our fun-loving beagle, was there to greet us. His tail was wagging with sheer joy and his face didn’t have a care in the world. Dexter ran right to Derek, as though he knew he needed some lovin’ and Derek said , “Dexter, will you help me lose weight?”. Dex responded with a good ol face lick and a bark that must have meant, “YES”.

Let me take a moment to share the thoughts running through my mind at the time. Been away from work for a doctor appointment, did the promotion calendar get updated, sales are up today- yeah, doctor tells me my husband might not live to 40 – be compassionate, I don’t have much time to be because what’s for supper, did I flip the clothes from the dryer before they started to stink, crap, I didn’t … add detergent and “rewash” (again, I think!), how can my iPhone battery be low I only read and sent 65 emails in the waiting room and, oh, today we are starting a workout plan with our dog. Today. Today, with our dog that doesn’t have a harness.  (I know, I am the CEO of a pet products company but didn’t have a harness; unprepared and stubborn buyer!)

We changed our clothes; put on our stylish sneakers (that I picked out because they matched Brady’s baseball team colors), latched onto Dexter’s collar and off we went. 1 mile, 2 miles, 3 miles …. on our journey to lose weight with the help of our dog.

3 miles on our first day! What were we thinking? Here’s what we were thinking … the doctor said he should lose 30 pounds and we must have heard him say that 30 pounds were missing in our neck of the woods and we were the search committee. We walked the gravel road like passerbys that broke down, or someone searching for a needle in a hay bail (we don’t call them stacks these days).

Sara's Christmas Countdown Checklist

Today my girlfriend reminded me there are only 48 days before Christmas.

She evidently forgot that I work in retail and have been planning since July. Haha, I thought to myself. Then, it hit me like a well-packed snowball! I haven't a thing ready for this holiday season!

After a mini melt-down and a glass of wine, I jotted down my list & thought I would share .... just in case you are still figuring out how to be a rockstar in 48 days or less.

get Gift set for Dexter & ONLY 3 stocking stuffers (not as many as last year I'm afraid - darn health care costs)
   
give Gift under $10 for neighbor who helps with Dexter and a $20 for his girlfriend Maggie. Also grab a few gift-giving bags to fill with homemade goodies (can't let Martha down)
   
invite Get the Holipaw Party on the calendar (Dec. 7 for us) & send invites (I'm using the Facebook image download to save time, THANK YOU Facebook events!)
   
plan Grab snacks, a few party favors and beverage recipes (there are going to be several dogs under one roof - we WILL need a few drinks!)
   
enjoy Take a few minutes for myself to relax, review my ever-growing Christmas list & test a few of those drink recipes before the party. It is the friendly thing to do after all!

The clock is indeed ticking but I got this!

The chicken jerky mystery is all over the news and weighing heavy on dog owners’ minds, as it should be. From the very first day our four-legged friends enter our lives, it is our responsibility to provide the love, environment and nutrition they need to live happy & healthy lives. The nutritional responsibility is much more difficult than it should be due to limited regulations of pet food packaging. Manufacturers are not required to list the country of origin for ingredients on pet food labels; a challenge that has both the FDA and the USDA on their toes.

When our industry is faced with challenges like this we can get angry, get nervous or get smarter. We have chosen the latter and hope the same for you. My father always told me to, "trust everyone, but always cut the deck." That came to mind Tuesday when the full version of the situation hit the streets.

Know Your Suppliers & Brands
SitStay.com is one of many great dog supplies retailers. Although we don't know a lot about the others we do take pride in working side by side with our pets and the products we share with others. Our arms reach from the product mirrors to the arms reach relationships we keep with our manufacturers. This benefits our customers in many ways including quality assurance, recommendations, shared passion and knowledge of the products we promote. Does it make us perfect? Nah, we're real people, too.

Read the Packaging
Although there may be limitations on what is required on pet food labels, those that are proud of where their products are rooted shout it all over their bags. Ingredients speak a thousand words, understand your dog's needs and make good decisions. Another important identifier on the packaging is the price. Cheap is cheap. Quality has it's price tag and can usually feed your gut with a bit more of the instinct that also goes along with purchasing products.

Ask Questions
I am pretty sure this was also something we learned in kindergarten but it can never be reiterated enough. Quality retailers and manufacturers spend much of their time wishing they could chat more with pet owners. Reach out, ask questions, get knowledgeable.

We were just made aware of the recent announcement and loss of the nearly 600 dogs due to chicken jerky treats that were sourced in China. Most importantly, our prayers go out to those who have lost. 

Since the announcement this afternoon, the SitStay product development team met to identify ways we can help and initiate a deep dive into the products we carry at SitStay. The most important qualifier we have for on boarding products is ingredient sourcing and production in the USA. We usually get 100% truth and clarity. But, not always, which is why we are putting together a team to focus on it.

We encourage you to purge any treats or food that you may be concerned about. It's better to be safe than sorry. Our friends at the FDA have released a fact sheet for consumers. They suggest eliminating treats from your dog's diet.
